TECHNOLOGY

SALARY:

£30,500, 10% Performance related bonus & additional benefits

LOCATIONS:

Ipswich, Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow, Cheltenham and London

ENTRY CRITERIA:

280 UCAS points, and you will need to have a degree or postgraduate qualification in computer science, electronics, electronic engineering, maths, physics or an IT-related subject.

Over two years, you'll contribute to some pretty exciting projects. You'll get exposure to advanced technologies. And you'll have the chance to work alongside some of the best technical people in the industry.

There are lots of different roles and areas you could potentially gain experience in. We'll also give you the technical training you need to become a genuine expert in your field.

ABOUT

BT has always been at the cutting edge of technology - and we plan to be there for many years to come.

It helps that we have some of the best technical people in the industry. With the support of our world-class research function, they're able to bring up-to-the-minute solutions and technologies to people and businesses all over the world.

Right now, for example, our new fibre optic broadband is transforming the way people use the internet. And our conferencing technology is helping international organisations become more and more sustainable every day.

If you join the Technology programme, you could be based at our Adastral Park site near Ipswich. It's the home of BT's global innovation and development centre - and the birthplace of many a groundbreaking idea.

We have software engineering roles based in our other global development centres around the UK, inBelfast, Cardiff and Glasgow.

THE PROGRAMME

There are lots of different roles going in our Technology programme,and you should be able to get involved in plenty of different projects during your two years on the programme.

You could be involved in the roll-out of Super Fast Broadband. Or you might be working on our TV service, BT Vision. Or how about Future Voice (an innovative softswitch using VoIP)?

Below are the types of Technology roles we have available on the programme:

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

LOCATION: IPSWICH, BELFAST, CARDIFF AND GLASGOW

Being part of our ever-growing software engineering teams will give you the chance to get involved in the complete software development life cycle, including application design, development, testing and support.

Our product portfolio consists of real-time, high availability systems in the areas of voice, TV, content delivery and mobility. You will utilise and enhance your skills in a team developing applications on a variety of platforms including Linux, Windows and mobile platforms. We use a range of languages including well-established enterprise favourites such as Java and C++, as well as contemporary dynamic languages such as Ruby, Rails and MongoDB.

Being part of the BT software engineering community enables you to take advantage of continuous professional development and learning, ensuring your skills are kept up to date. For example, there are opportunities to participate in technical conferences and master classes on a variety of new topics.

To thrive in software engineering, you'll need to be passionate about writing good code, learning languages such as Java and C++ and solving complex problems, following industry best practices like test-driven development and continuous integration testing. You'll also need to have the drive to maintain a high standard of coding and documentation to ensure that our products continue to be of the highest quality. We're looking for people who are technically innovative, willing to learn, enjoy working as part of a larger team and are excited by the challenge of achieving the seemingly impossible.

NETWORK ENGINEERING

LOCATION: IPSWICH & BELFAST

You'll work alongside specialists in communications, electronics and information technology, carrying out a range of development and integration services for external customers. Your role could either focus on applied research or on the technical aspects of medium-to-large IT and communications engineering projects or programmes.

The networks team designs end to end solutions to enable communications both within the UK and across the world. The design remit includes gathering and analysing requirements, developing high level solutions, selecting network equipment, configuring a wide range of devices and testing to ensure a robust solution is deployed into one of BT's many networks across the globe.

Great network engineers need strong design and development skills, plus a good working knowledge of IP networks, protocols and network components would be ideal but experience is not essential. You'll also need to be someone who's happy to be responsible for a number of different technical requirements and projects at the same time. Above all, strong problem solving skills and a technical mind set are what we are looking for, but it's also important to be mindful of customer experience and the commercial application of the products we sell when producing the optimum solution.

We also have Belfast-basedroles inOperations Management, Field Engineering Management or Planning & Design which will keep you close to the technology and offer you the opportunity to manage teams of people in the field.

NETWORK AND IT OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

LOCATION: UK WIDE

We strive to provide a service that is acknowledged as world class and a customer experience that sets a standard to which others aspire, and you'll working within the team to help make this happen.

You'll be responsible for commission and configuration on BT Operate Networks to facilitate the effective delivery of service to customers. This will involve anything from design changes through to hardware and software upgrades.

You may also provide complex problem diagnosis and resolution for real-time major incidents, liaising with vendors and customer/developer groups as required.

A key responsibility will be to proactively monitor and analyse network event information for early identification of performance problems, making improvement recommendations to suppliers, operations and platform teams as appropriate.

RESEARCH

LOCATION: IPSWICH

A role in one of the best technology companies in the world is challenging but will provide you with the opportunity to develop world class problem solving and leadership skills. You will gain an understanding of the future challenges facing a global company and the research you perform will shape the future of BT.

Your new ideas may lead to patents and you will be supported through the complex global process of protecting the intellectual property resulting from your research. In some cases you will be working with other research and technology organisations from Europe and globally on collaborative projects.

Your main responsibility will be to create new technological solutions that address the key research challenges faced by the BT businesses. As part of your role you will be expected to both develop and contribute to the corpus of knowledge in your chosen field of expertise and as part of this you will be contributing to BT's world-class standing in telecommunications and ICT research. As your depth of technical knowledge grows, you will be asked to provide consultancy to teams across the BT businesses.

Research graduates need a broad range of technical skills and knowledge such as; Wireless and Mobility Solutions, Data Analytics and Modelling, Virtual Networks and the Cloud, Artificial Intelligence Systems, Security and Privacy Methodologies and the construction of new Business and Societal Models.

IT & SYSTEMS SECURITY

LOCATION: IPSWICH AND SWINDON

The security team cover a wealth of areas for people to get involved in. Some examples are; security research, delivering security architecture and assurance services, providing technical and project management support, providing bid support, design, investigations into security vulnerabilities, development and delivery of a range of identity services and delivery of professional services and networked IT services to BT customers and partners. In the digital world the handling of security is becoming ever more important and so offers people varied and exciting roles to work in.

MANAGED SERVICES & DESIGN SERVICES, TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS

LOCATION: BELFAST AND DUBLIN

Our Solutions team manage a variety of functions across BT Ireland to ensure a seamless end to end service for our customers, designing and building services and solutions they can rely on now and in the future. Wehave opportunities within our Design Services, Managed Services and Managed Delivery teams. You will be part of a team of professionals providing customers with innovative solutions and create unique Managed Services for both the Network and IT. The Solutions team in BT Ireland are committed to enhancing and improving customer services, cost savings and essentially removing business risks which in turn helps our customers to grow in a challenging economy.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Everyone who joins our Technology programme needs a strong technical background. A good start would be a degree or postgraduate qualification in computer science, electronics, electronic engineering, maths, physics or an IT-related subject.

Other essential skills depend on the specific role you are doing as the individual requirements for Software Engineering, Network Engineering, Research, IT & Systems Security and Network & IT Operations vary. Please see "The Programme" section above.

Overall we are looking for people who are technically astute and excited by the challenge of achieving the seemingly impossible. You will be passionate about technology and its' application in the commercial world. You will need to be able to demonstrate that passion and show you have the ability to learn new skills.

This is on top of the qualities we look for in all of our graduates.

LEARNING AND SUPPORT

As well as getting valuable hands-on experience, you will go through ourcore graduate training programme, which involves 20 days of formal learning spread over two years. This is designed to help your personal development and help you pick up the skills you need to do a technicalleadership role in BT.

Of course, you'll get lots of technical training too (we want to help you become an expert in your field, after all). This could include training in areas such as Agile software development, enterprise software languages such as Java and C++,Cisco, ITIL, communication networks and network security.
